Edition No. 20 — San Jose del Cabo
“Drink heavily with locals whenever possible.”
— Anthony Bourdain
Welcome back, travelers—
Edition No. 20 takes us to Cabo. But maybe not the one you’re imagining.
Anthony Bourdain once suggested the best way to understand a place is simple: drink heavily with locals whenever possible. In San José del Cabo, that advice usually begins with mezcal, makes a stop at a neighborhood brewery, and ends somewhere around sunset.
This isn’t the Cabo of mega all-inclusive resorts and headline-grabbing nightlife. San José del Cabo is the cool cousin to Cabo San Lucas. A little more indie. A little more local. And, if you ask us, a whole lot more interesting.
We’re checking into Hotel El Ganzo, the artsy waterfront hideaway known as much for its artist-in-residence program as its design-forward rooms and a rooftop that will absolutely steal your sunset.
This is also the Cabo that quietly gave birth to Baja’s farm-to-table movement. We’ve got three unforgettable dinners waiting under the stars at Flora's Field Kitchen, Acre Restaurant, and Suelo Sur.
Along the way we’ll find handmade pasta, local brews, and the Art Walk that turns the historic district into a cocktail-in-hand street party every Thursday night.
So here we go.
Next stop: San José del Cabo.
AKA… the other Cabo.
P.S. Don’t forget the March PERK from FORKFUL for 50% off chef prepped meals, delivered!
Cheers,
Logan & The TRAVELISM Crew ✈️

📍 Snapshot: San Jose del Cabo: At the quieter end of the Baja peninsula, San José del Cabo trades neon nightlife for art galleries, farm dinners, and historic charm. Cobblestone streets, mezcal bars, and the weekly Art Walk define the rhythm here. Compared with nearby Cabo San Lucas, it feels slower, more local, and effortlessly stylish.
❤️ What We Love: The character and the culinary scene. Baja’s garden-to-table magic is something to behold. Several restaurants literally sit in the midst of a farm. The historic district feels authentically Mexican with cobblestone streets, pastel colonial buildings, galleries, mezcal bars, and even a local brewery.
💪 Pro tip: Thursday’s Art Walk turns the entire town into a cocktail-in-hand street party. 🍹🎨🌵
Where To Stay
Hotel El Ganzo: Industrial-chic meets Baja bohemian. Concrete lines, bold contemporary art, and marina views create a creative, slightly rebellious atmosphere where rooftop sunsets, music culture, and desert-meets-sea energy define the experience.
The Vibe: Art-forward Baja escape where rooftop cocktails meet marina sunsets, beach club afternoons, and creative energy. Relaxed, stylish, slightly bohemian, with just enough buzz after dark.
Why We Love This Place: Creative energy meets Baja sunshine at Hotel El Ganzo. Think rooftop sunsets viewed from the hot tub, art-filled rooms, swimmable beach access, and a relaxed food scene that rewards lingering.
The Rooms
The hotel’s 69 rooms feel more like creative studios than traditional resort suites. Ocean-facing terraces, Baja craftsmanship, and natural textures create a calm, design-forward atmosphere. Some rooms feature original art interventions, while details like Italian sheets and spacious layouts make it easy to settle into the slower rhythm of Baja life.
🌊 Ocean View King: This is the room with the best bang for the buck. Wake up to views of the Sea of Cortez views with relaxed Baja elegance. Plush king bed, soaking tub, artisan bath salts, curated minibar, and quiet moments designed for slowing down.
🛁 Jacuzzi King: The splurge move at Hotel El Ganzo is the Jacuzzi King. An indoor jacuzzi sets the tone, while the spacious terraza features a second outdoor jacuzzi overlooking the marina. It’s Baja relaxation dialed all the way up. Morning coffee, sunset soaks, and long quiet moments built for slowing down.
The Eat + Drink Scene
Dining at the hotel’s El Restaurante leans Baja-Mediterranean with a chef’s curiosity and a serious devotion to farm, sea, and garden. Expect bright ceviches, grilled seafood, and produce pulled from nearby farms. The menus feel relaxed but thoughtful, rooted in Mexico’s coastal traditions with just enough creativity to keep every meal feeling like a small celebration.
Born on the cultural border between Tijuana and San Diego, Chef José Luis cooks with one foot in Mexico and the other roaming the world. His menus move easily between chilaquiles and huevos rancheros, waffles and pancakes. It’s Baja cooking with a global passport where breakfast feels happily bilingual. 🌮🍳🥞
El Restaurante
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner unfold beside the marina with signature chilaquiles, bright ceviches, and plates built around Baja’s local bounty. Nearly everything on the menu, from vegetables to dairy and fresh catch, is sourced nearby.
🥞 Breakfast
Chilaquiles Ganzo, sourdough waffles, and the brioche breakfast sandwich are the move.
🌮 Lunch
Start with guacamole, fresh sashimi, and a round of tacos. Pair everything with crisp cervezas from Baja Brewing Company.
🍷 Dinner
Now we lean in. Begin with a mezcalita and a crudo. Split one of the big mains like the Whole Fish a la Talla Verde or the smoked farm chicken with a chilled rosé. Dessert calls for Mexican bubbles and fresh fruit under the Baja night sky.
Beach + Swim Club
🏖️ The Scene: Playa El Ganzo is the hotel’s beach club set on one of the few swimmable coves in San José del Cabo. Cabanas, sunbeds, and open-air dining line the shore while DJs, live music, and sunset cocktails keep the energy humming beside the Sea of Cortez.
The Bites: Chef José Luis Hinostroza takes his cues from Mexico’s great coastal kitchens. From Pacific beach towns to Gulf port cities and the flavors of the Yucatán, the menu celebrates bold seafood cooking, bright citrus, and traditions that feel perfectly at home beside the Sea of Cortez.
What To Order: The Fried Chicken Sandwich, cut in half to share w/ the LA PLAYITA cocktail that is tequila meets ginger meets cucumber meets grapefruit magic!
A Serious Rooftop
🌅 The Scene: High above the marina at Hotel El Ganzo, the rooftop is built for golden hour. Infinity pool, jacuzzi, cocktails, and sweeping views of mountains and sea. Come for a drink, stay for sunset.
What To Order: Start with the guacamole finished with herb oil, then move to the amaranth tempura tacos and shrimp tostadas with XO sauce. Add one of the layered sandwiches to share and pair everything with a chilled cocktail or a crisp Valle de Guadalupe white.
Farm-to-Table Scene
Together these three restaurants show why San José del Cabo quietly became one of the most exciting food towns in Mexico. The Baja farm-to-table movement isn’t a trend here. It’s a way of life.
🌿 Flora's Field Kitchen
The original farm-to-table star of Los Cabos. Set on a working organic farm, Flora Farms delivers wood-fired cooking, handmade pastas, and seasonal produce steps from the garden. Dinner here feels like a Baja countryside dinner party under string lights.
What To Order: Start with the garden salad and wood-fired flatbread, then housemade pasta or grass-fed steak. Finish with the famous carrot cake.
🌴 Acre Restaurant
Part jungle hideaway, part culinary playground. Acre blends Mexican ingredients with global technique in a lush palm grove setting. Creative cocktails, bold flavors, and dramatic design make this one of the most memorable dining experiences in Baja.
What To Order: Order the Acre Caesar, grilled octopus, and wood-fired vegetables. Pair with a mezcal cocktail or Baja wine and share dessert.
🌱 Suelo Sur
Suelo Sur takes the farm-to-table idea deeper, focusing on Baja agriculture and open-fire cooking. Seasonal vegetables, local seafood, and regional ingredients shine in dishes that feel rustic, thoughtful, and rooted in the land.
What To Order: Start with roasted vegetables and fresh crudo, then lean into open-fire seafood or seasonal meats with natural wine. Dessert if you still have room.
Pasta, Not To Be Missed
🍝🍷 Come a Casa
A cozy downtown pasta bar where two brothers roll fresh dough behind the counter each night. This is th spot to wander into after the art walk. Expect good wine, and a warm buzz of a tiny Italian kitchen tucked into Baja. Sit at the bar and wait for one of the brothers to hand you a fresh taste of pasta.
What To Order: Start with burrata, then go straight for the handmade ravioli or classic carbonara. Add a glass of Italian red and linger.
Brunch
🍞 Ruba's Bakery & Bistro
A Michelin-recognized bakery and brunch spot set in a charming historic house. Expect buttery croissants, sourdough loaves, bold chilaquiles, and a lively patio filled with coffee, locals, and Art District energy.
Pro Tip: Arrive early for the freshest pastries and patio seating before the Art District brunch crowd rolls in.
Local Brews
🍺 Baja Brewing Company
A laid-back Baja brewery pouring crisp lagers and hop-forward ales with marina views and ocean breezes. Catch a game, grab a tasting flight, order tacos, and settle into the easy rhythm of San José del Cabo with locals, travelers, and cold beer.
Wine All The Time
🍷The Wine Spot: A cozy downtown wine bar where shelves of global bottles meet Baja hospitality. Order a tasting flight, build a charcuterie board, and linger over conversation as the Art Walk crowd drifts through the historic district.
Pro Tip: Make a note to check out the amazing local wines from Baja.

Art Galleries
The art scene in San José del Cabo traces back decades, when painters and sculptors were drawn to Baja’s desert light and quiet coastal rhythm. Over time, the historic district evolved into a thriving gallery corridor, anchored by the now-famous Thursday Art Walk. Today, it’s one of Mexico’s most vibrant small art communities. 🎨🌵
🎨 Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery
Bright, playful, and a little surreal. The kind of gallery where art feels alive and the energy spills out onto the street.
🖼Galería de Ida Victoria
The polished side of the San José art scene. Think collector-level pieces, beautiful lighting, and a quiet moment of culture between mezcal stops.

Playa Chileno & Santa Maria Beach Are Prefect Snorkeling
Beaches
🌊 Playa Chileno: Bring a towel, snorkel gear, and a cold cerveza. The water here looks like a screensaver.
🐠 Santa María Beach: Just a few minutes from Chileno, Santa María Beach is a horseshoe-shaped cove framed by granite cliffs.
🏖 Palmilla Beach: Closer to San José del Cabo, Palmilla Beach is one of the region’s classic old-Baja beaches. It’s swimmable, scenic, and far quieter than the big resort beaches in Cabo San Lucas.
🏄 Costa Azul: Classic Baja surf culture with tacos and Pacific energy. This is the spot to watch surfers.
Pro Tip: One thing that surprises visitors to Los Cabos is that many beaches aren’t safe for swimming because of strong shore breaks, so locals tend to gravitate toward protected coves like Chileno and Santa María.
Bottom Line
San José del Cabo proves Cabo doesn’t have to shout. Art galleries replace nightclubs, farm dinners replace buffets, and sunset margaritas stretch long into the Baja evening. It’s Cabo with culture, character, and just enough desert magic.
