Edition No. 30 — Isabela, Puerto Rico

Welcome back, travelers—

Edition No. 30 brings us to a version of Puerto Rico most travelers never really meet. Not the polished Condado circuit. Not the over-programmed resort version of the Caribbean. The west coast moves differently. Slower mornings. Salt in the air. Dirt roads lined with palms and surfboards instead of valet stands.

Isabela has always carried that energy well. Positioned on Jobos Beach, which is one of the most consistent waves any where in the world, this is a place where surfing is like a heart beating. Just the way of life.

For our journey, we’re making Villa Montaña Beach Resort our basecamp, which leans into the surfing spirit without trying too hard. The property feels less like a glossy luxury resort and more like an old Caribbean hideaway that quietly figured out wellness before wellness became branding.

This is the kind of place where you wake up early for the beach, disappear for a massage by afternoon, and somehow end the night drinking rum cocktails beside the cliffs wondering why you ever overcomplicate vacations in the first place.

Next stop…Isabela, Puerto Rico.

Cheers,

Surfing the Legendary Jobos Beach in Isabela, PR

Our Destination

Isabela, Puerto Rico: Aguadilla’s Rafael Hernández Airport offers direct access from major U.S. gateways including New York, Newark, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale… putting Puerto Rico’s surf coast surprisingly close to the mainland.

The Vibe: Isabela moves at surfboard pace. Cliffside sunsets, salt-air mornings, horseback beaches, barefoot cocktails, and hidden Caribbean calm wrapped inside Puerto Rico’s untamed west coast.

Virtually A Private Beach at Villa Montana Beach Resort

Where To Stay

Villa Montaña Beach Resort: A vintage Caribbean hideaway meets barefoot wellness retreat. Villa Montaña works because it resists over-design. The property is spread across lush beachfront grounds with low-slung villas, winding garden paths, and a rhythm that feels intentionally disconnected from the louder side of island tourism.

Nothing feels rushed here. Not breakfast. Not the beach. Not sunset. The rooms lean warm and residential rather than hyper-modern, which ultimately fits the atmosphere better. You are here for ocean air, oversized terraces, tropical quiet, and the luxury of not needing an itinerary every hour of the day.

Why it works: The resort still feels tied to Isabela’s surf-town roots instead of trying to become a generic luxury property.Book it for: Long weekends that accidentally turn into four nights.

The Hotel Rooms at Villa Montana Beach Resort

The Rooms

Superior Hotel Rooms: Warm Spanish-style details, terracotta floors, and artistically painted walls give the Superior Hotel Room an effortless old Caribbean feel. Designed for slow mornings and post-beach unwinds, the space pairs luxurious linens, thoughtful comforts, and a private terrace with the relaxed rhythm that makes Isabela feel worlds away from everyday life.

This is not minimalist luxury. It is softer than that. Gardens outside your windows. The move is booking enough room to actually stay in the room. Morning coffee on the terrace matters here.

The One Bedroom Villas

The Splurge

One-Bedroom Garden View Villas: Bright, breezy, and steps from the sand, the One Bedroom Garden Villas blend barefoot Caribbean charm with understated comfort.

Expect private terraces, terracotta floors, artistic touches, luxe linens, and sprawling lawns that roll straight toward the beach. Spacious enough for families, cozy enough for slow mornings with Puerto Rican coffee and ocean air.

Poolside Dining at The Eclipse

Eat + Drink

🍽️ Eclipse Restaurant: Nearly every part of the day seems to orbit around the restaurant. Mornings begin with rich Puerto Rican coffee and ocean breezes, afternoons drift into poolside lunches and lingering brunches, and evenings unfold over sunset cocktails, fresh seafood, and wood-fired pizzas straight from the Napolitano oven.

Set just steps from the sand, Eclipse blends barefoot Caribbean ease with a polished coastal dining scene. The newly refreshed oceanfront space mixes retro-industrial touches, weathered driftwood tables, and sweeping Atlantic views that make lingering through sunset feel almost mandatory.

The menu leans into elevated coastal comfort: freshly flown-in oysters, local seafood, Prime Black Angus steaks, and the pizzas that have quietly become legendary along Puerto Rico’s west coast. Executive Chef Rolando brings a modern island approach to every plate, creating the kind of dinner experience that starts casually and somehow turns into a three-hour evening beside the waves. 🍷🌴

What To Order: Start with the crostinis layered with whipped ricotta, avocado, ibérico, and rich tomato jus, then move straight into the sweet potato gnocchi bathed in smoky pumpkin arrabbiata sauce. Comforting, vibrant, and exactly the kind of dinner that pairs perfectly with a lingering bottle of wine in Isabela.

Bottom Line

Isabela is for travelers who want Puerto Rico with less polish and more soul. Come for the surf-town atmosphere, the slow wellness rhythm, and the feeling that the Caribbean used to be a little more personal before every resort became interchangeable. This is not the island’s flashiest stay. It is one of its most beautifully paced.
